Cmdr. Joseph Wadsworth, a retired Navy officer and a retired associate general counsel and secretary of the Travelers Insurance Cos., died Aug. 23 at Avery Heights Church Homes in Hartford.

He was 81.

Wadsworth was named after his great-great-great-great-grandfather, who hid the Connecticut Charter in the Charter Oak Tree on the Wyllys Estate in Hartford.

Wadsworth had lived at 150 Fern St. in Hartford his entire life and also had a home in Cormorant Point, Block Island, R.I.

He worked in the legal offices at Travelers from 1946 until his retirement in 1974. Before that, Wadsworth had worked in New York City as a lawyer, first with the firm of Cadwallader, Wickersham & Taft from 1934 to 1936 and then with Townsend and Lewis from 1936 to 1941.

Wadsworth, a 1934 graduate of the University of Virginia Law School, was admitted to the bar to practice in Virginia, New York and Connecticut. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserves in 1932. He became an ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve in 1939 and a commander in the Naval Reserve in 1951.

He was awarded seven military ribbons with three battle stars in the Asiatic-Pacific area for his active duty during World War II. From 1946 to 1949, Wadsworth commanded the U.S. Naval Reserve Battalion 3-2 in Hartford.

Wadsworth's avocation was yachting, and he owned the 44-foot ketch "Compass Rose," which he sailed for many years from Block Island.

He was a past president of the Officers Club of Connecticut, the St. Anthony Club of Connecticut Valley, and the Navy League of the United States, Hartford Council. He was a member of the Society of the Cincinnati, Society of the Mayflower, Society of the Descendants of Hartford, the Pilgrims of the United States, Twentieth Century Club, the Dauntless Club, the Off Soundings Club, Retired Officers Association, Reserve Officers Association, Block Island Club, Hartford Golf Club, Hartford Canoe Club and the University Club.

Wadsworth graduated from Kingswood School in West Hartford in 1928. He earned his bachelor's degree at the University of Virginia, where he was captain of the fencing team. While in the law school there, he was Phi Beta Kappa and an editor of the Virginia Law Review.

A memorial service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at St. John's Church, 679 Farmington Ave., West Hartford. Interment will be Sept. 20 at 2 p.m. in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va. The Pratt Funeral Service, Wethersfield, is coordinating the arrangements.
