Youngest son of the famous architect of the same name. He was a graduate of St. Mary's College in Baltimore. He started his career as a lawyer and later became, through the influence of his older brother John, a civil engineer with the B&O Railroad. He later worked on a variety of roads, railroads, and canal projects.

In 1832 he married Ellen Hazelhurst, with whom he had five children: Charles H. Latrobe, Rev. Benjamin H. Latrobe, Mary (Latrobe) Onderdonk, Catherine (Latrobe) Weston, and Nora (Latrobe) Vinton.

Latrobe Hall, on the Homewood campus of Johns Hopkins University, is named for Benjamin Latrobe.
