Merrill C. Scott and his twin brother Murray B. Scott were born November 29, 1926 at their family home in Henderson. They grew up there and attended the local schools. Merrill was Salutatorian of the Henderson Central School, Class of 1945. Both he and Murray were graduated early so they could enlist in Army Air Corps. They served for two years during World War II, attending the Nuremburg Trials as military observers. They were honorably discharged in 1946.

After leaving the military, Merrill studied automotive mechanics before he and Murray joined their father in establishing the "new" Scott's Mobil full service station and garage which replaced the original business started by their father in 1936.

The brothers took over the business in 1960 and ran it together under a partnership known as M&M Scott....which was also the name over the door to the garage. They continued to run the station until Halloween, 2004. At that time, it simply became impossible for an independent station and garage to compete with the bigger players and a major landmark of Jefferson county was closed. Overall, they spent 68 years working in the garage, first for their father and then as co-owners.

Merrill and Murray were much loved fixtures in the Henderson community. They were an endless source of information about the town, its residents, politics and just about any other topic that came up. Their common sense with automobiles was a welcome change from today's computers and code readers. It seemed there wasn't anything they couldn't fix with a hair dryer, some duct tape, wire, and a bit of ingenuity.

They were good friends of my family and were a part of my summers from the time I was 6. Even the last years running the station, when my car died, I could call them and one of the brothers would hop in the truck and come to my cottage to get it fixed for me. When my grandmother was attacked at our cottage and managed to lock herself in the bedroom, it wasn't the police she called, it was the "Scott Boys", who then got the police and ambulance out to her. Growing up my grandmother always told me she couldn't tell the twins apart, but for some reason, they each were very unique to me. I was always able to recognize each and enjoyed their unique characters. In the end, they died within a month of each other, Murry passing on January 9, 2013 and Merrill on February 4, 2013. They will be truly missed by all who knew them.

Merrill was predeceased by his wife, Nina Reed Scott, and a son, Mark. He was survived by a daughter-in-law, a second son, a grandson and his wife, and a great grandson and great granddaughter.
