Composer. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he was a talented composer and arranger whom achieved renown among jazz musicians during the swing era. He began as a drummer and then played trumpet with the Red Norvo orchestra, becoming the band's full-time arranger. He went on to arrange and compose for Artie Shaw, Tommy Dorsey, Ray McKinley and Woody Herman. He was especially noted for his arrangement works for Benny Goodman's songs "Benny Rides Again", "Moonlight on the Ganges" and "Clarinet a la King". From 1952-1957, he was leader of the Sauter-Finnegan Orchestra and composed all the groups arrangemnets. During the 1960s, he collaborated with Stan Getz, wrote string compositions such as "I'm Late, I'm Late" and the score for the film "Mickey One" (1965). He died in New York City and was posthumously inducted into the Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame in 2003.
