Edith was the first child born to Richard Day and his wife Catharine Amelia Smith. She grew up in Ohio and taught school in Ohio and New York before marrying Dr. Asa Allen in June of 1882. They lived in Michigan, Wisconsin and Colorado before moving to Providence, RI in the fall of 1894. Edith was the mother of 9 children, 3 of whom died in childhood.
After her husband died in 1921, Edith held various jobs such as housemother at St. Andrews School for Boys and she worked for the American Red Cross. In 1928, after her youngest son died, she made her home with her daughter and her husband, George and Eleanor Welch.
Edith loved to travel and spent several winters traveling to Florida or California with her brothers and their families.
