He married Helen Ellen McLeish about 1855 in Scotland

Although James Sr. is listed as a farmer in the 1870 census of Sanilac County, Michigan, he was also a carpenter, cabinet maker, and casket maker. As James Jr. grew up his father taught him the craft of working with wood. Together they built a number of barns and houses in the Marlett area as well as many caskets. Good lumbar was used in all cases - for the most part this lumber was hard wood with no flaws or knot holes. In later years my father would worry about the modern caskets which he felt, had been covered with cloths in order to cover rough and inferior wood.
