Academy Award, born March 18, 1986, was a son of Secretariat and the Mr. Prospector mare Mine Only. The small chestnut did not race until age four due to a foot injury. During his racing career he won the Grade II Manhattan Handicap and placed in two other graded stakes. He retired with a record of 19: 5-3-1 and earnings of $226,943. He was trained by his owner and breeder Peter Blum.
Academy Award entered stud at Claiborne Farm, later moving to Win Row Farm in Ohio in 1999. He stood there until he was pensioned from breeding in 2009. He lived out the rest of his life at Old Friends Equine Retirement Facility. Academy Award lost his battle with chronic laminitis on August 24, 2010 at the age of 24.
As a stallion, Academy Award is represented by 10 stakes winners, including Grade I winner Four On the Floor and Brazilian champion Mr. McCartney.
