She was preceded in death by her husband, Col. William R.T. Oakes, DDS; son, William R.T. Oakes Jr.; and sister, Dare B. Findley.
A lifelong resident of Hampton, she retired from the Hampton School System in 1991, was a volunteer at Hampton General Hospital, and was an avid fisherman. She also enjoyed camping, bowling, needle work, and playing bridge.
Jane is survived by three sons, Martin and wife, Jacque of Fayetteville, N.C., David of Richmond, Kevin and wife, Debbie of Virginia Beach; three daughters, Ginny Carroll and husband, Danny of Yorktown, Susan Rawles and husband, Willie of Houston, Texas, and Mimi Cagle of Hampton; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Friday, May 25, 2012, in the R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home Chapel, by Dr. Michael Lee Nelson. The family will receive friends following the service, at a reception, at the Magnolia House.
