Popular British actor, the father of the actresses Emma and Sophie Thompson. Born in Sleaford, he trained as an actor at the London Old Vic School and in 1952 he joined the company where he met his future wife, actress Phyllida Law. He appeared in many television series including "The Avengers," "Z Cars," "Dixon of Dock Green" and "Doctor Who." He was most famous for his childrens television work, notably as presenter of "Play School." However, his greatest achievement came as creator of the popular "Magic Roundabout" which he originally wrote from his cottage in Argyll. He also appeared in several films including "Private Potter" (1962). Following his death he was cremated at Golders Green on 4th December, 1982.
