His whereabouts in 1860 are uncertain, thanks in part to his very common name, but he was a laborer by trade and stood 5' 8" tall with brown hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg February 15, 1865, mustered into federal service there February 22 as a private with the second organization of Co. C, 74th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company August 29, 1865.
