Professional Baseball Player. He played in the Negro Leagues during the 1890s, 1900s, and 1910s. He was born one of ten children as Sherman Barton to Milton Barton (1838-1885), and his wife Lucinda Robinson Barton (1838-1929), in Normal, Illinois, on February 2, 1875. He was educated locally, worked as a stove repairman, and was drafted during World War I, but he never served. He played the position of outfielder, centerfielder, rightfielder, and leftfielder, with the Page France Giants making his professional baseball debut with them in 1898. The outfielder, centerfielder, rightfielder, and leftfielder, who batted right and who threw right also played with the Chicago Columbia Giants from 1899 to 1900, the Algona Brownies from 1902 to 1903, the Leland Giants from 1905 to 1906, the St. Paul Colored Gophers from 1907 to 1910, and the Chicago Giants in 1911. His 162 Game Average consisted of 640 Plate Appearances, 579 At Bats, 61 Runs Scored, 141 Hits, 25 Hits, 6 Triples, 2 Homeruns, 61 Runs Batted In, 26 Stolen Bases, 0 Caught Stealing, 40 Walks, 0 Strikeouts, 0 Intentional Walks, 2 Hit By Pitch, 19 Sacrifice Hits, 0 Sacrifice Flies, 0 Grounded Into Doubles, .244 Batting Average, .295 On Base Percentage, .320 Slugging Percentage, .615 On Base Percentage Plus Slugging Percentage, and 91 Adjusted On Base Percentage Plus Slugging Percentage. After leaving professional baseball he worked as a repairman in a furniture factory in Chicago, Illinois, until his death. He passed away in Chicago, Illinois, on June 11, 1947, at the age of 72. Following his death, he was buried in Mount Glenwood Memory Gardens South in Glenwood, Illinois. He was married to Lillie Jones Barton (1876-). His younger brother was the professional baseball player Eugene "Cherry" Barton (1880-1922), who also played in the Negro Leagues in the positions of an infielder and centerfielder with the Leland Giants in 1906, and the Minneapolis Keystones from 1908 to 1910. His younger brother Eugene "Cherry" Barton passed away in Chicago, Illinois, on July 3, 1922, at the age of 42, and he was buried in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery in Bloomington, Illinois.
