Genevieve “Gen” Ashworth was born July 30, 1915 in Lund, Nevada to Mary Jane Oxborrow and John Earl Ashworth. She had a happy childhood and especially enjoyed visits to her Grandmother Mary Oxborrow’s home located across the street in Lund. When she was seven the family moved to Kimberly.

Her father Earl and her Uncle Ted Oxborrow carried freight to Ely and owned the best team of horses and equipment in the area. Uncle Ted had a very serious accident and had to be rushed to Salt Lake for medical care. In order to pay the hospital bills the family farm had to be sold. Earl then became the foreman in the machine shop at the Kimberly mine, near Ely.

During her four years of high school, Gen rode the school bus from Kimberly to Ely each day. She participated in sports, including tennis, basketball and baseball, and was an outstanding student in mathematics. The winter sports of skiing and sledding are remembered with pleasure. During high school she watched with pride as her older brother and sister, Don and Irene, starred in the school plays and operettas. She graduated at age sixteen and began working in the medical field, saving for a college education. While attending the University of Nevada in Reno, she lived with her sister Irene.

Her high school boyfriend, Tom Knobbs, was attending University of San Francisco on an athletic scholarship. He was injured playing football and returned to Ely. They began dating and were married in January 1935. Tom became the Shell Oil Distributor for the area, and Gen worked in a doctor’s office until Linda, their first daughter, was born January 27, 1941. Cathy was born April 28, 1944, in Ely, Nevada.

Family activities included fishing and hunting in the Ruby Mountains where they owned a cabin with her sister Irene and Irene’s husband, Dave Barnard. They also became avid golfers and spent weekends enjoying the out of doors.

The family moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, in 1957. After their daughters graduated from high school Gen and Tom moved back to Reno and lived there until Tom’s death in 1966. Gen began working as a secretary in the school system and enjoyed a close association with her daughters.

Seven years later she married Doug Peterson, an Elko businessman. They traveled extensively and enjoyed golfing and fishing together. After divorcing, Gen lived in Henderson, Nevada, near her daughter, Cathy.

Gen was a 15-year colon cancer survivor, but a fall in 2002 at age 87 was the beginning of the end of her wonderful life. She spent a short time in hospital, and was moved to hospice. She passed away on December 4, 2002 in Henderson, Nevada. She lies in rest with her first husband at Mountain View Cemetery in Reno, Nevada.

Genevieve was preceded in death by her first husband, Thomas E Knobbs, and her eldest daughter, Linda Sue Knobbs Saltern of Reno, who is also interred at Mountain View Mausoleum. She is survived by her daughter Catherine Jane Knobbs Kanefsky, of Tulsa, OK; and granddaughters Shari Saltern Mason (Rob) of Reno, Suzanne Saltern Gould of Reno, and Lisa Kanefsky Lebedoff (Tyson) of Tulsa; and 5 great-grandchildren.
