Wihelm Wien was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1911, according to the Nobel Prize Committee, “for his discoveries regarding the laws governing the radiation of heat." Born the son of a farmer, he attended public school before he went, in 1882, to the University of Göttingen to study mathematics. A graduate of the University of Berlin, he became known for "Wien's Distribution Law", which concerned the description of the spectrum of thermal radiation In 1900, Wien obtained the chair of Physics at the University of Wurzburg, and in the same year he published his main work "Lehrbuch der Hydrodynamik,” which was a textbook of hydrodynamics. In 1920 he was appointed Professor of Physics at Munich, where he remained throughout the rest of his life. He was a member of several learned scientific societies. He married and had four children.
