William Straight was born on June 26, 1831 in Carrol County, Indiana, the son of Amassa Christian Straight and Sarah Davenport, one of seven children. William's grandfather, was born in Germany, and fought in the Revolutionary War under General Washington. During the Civil War he served in the Union Army. After the war he married Elizabeth Berry and they had two children, Clarence and George. Elizabeth died in 1859 and he was remarried to Mary Jane Lucy on January 17, 1864 in Monticello, Indiana. They had three daughters and five sons. In 1880, they lived in Harrison County, Iowa, where he was a farmer. At one time they lived in Louisville, Kansas, where their son Alfred Nelson Thomas ( Pat ) Straight was born. William Straight died on December 20 1893, in Logan ,Iowa
