Mary Jane Lucy was born on October 18, 1840 in Cass County, Indiana, the daughter of Webb John Lucy and Sarah (Sally) Wiley. On January 17 she was married to William Straight, who fought for the North in the Civil War. They had four sons and two daughters and lived in Harrison County, Iowa. There were also two children from a previous marriage of the husband William and Elizabeth Berry who died in 1859. A son, Alfred Nelson Thomas (Pat) was born in 1879, while they were in Louisville, Kansas, before they returned to Iowa. She died on April 1, 1893, in Woodbine, Iowa and is buried in Logan, Iowa.
