Maria Josepha Reiter was the youngest daughter of Karl and Mara Reiter–Wenger. She was the first love of Adolph Hitler having met him in 1926 in Berchtesgaden when Hitler invited her to one of his speeches. She received letters and postcards from him, and a gold bracelet on her 17th birthday. The affair ended in 1927 when Maria discovered he had visited Berchtesgaden without stopping in to see her. She thought he had another girlfriend and tried to hang herself with a clothesline, but was rescued by her brother-in-law. It was later discovered that Hitler's refusal to see her was because he had received an anonymous letter accusing him of sexual abuse of an underage girl. In 1930, she married Ferdinand Woldrich and they opened a restaurant named 'Berghof' after Hitler's home in Obersalzberg. She and Ferdinand divorced in 1933, the court costs allegedly paid for by Hitler. In 1936 she married Georg Kubisch, a SS adjutant of Joseph Goebbels. The marriage was rumored to have been ordered by Hitler. Georg was killed in 1940 during the invasion of France. Maria last marriage was in 1945 to Walter Zierahn, a partially paralyzed SS soldier wounded during the fighting in Norway. After he died she moved to an rest home in Munich where she died depressed, an excessive drinker with scleroses. Maria told her story to the German periodical Stern in 1959. The details of Reiter and Hitler's physical relationship cannot be confirmed, though the fact that Hitler was in love with her was asserted by his sister Paula, who stated that Maria was the only woman who might have curbed his destructive impulses.
