Actor. He will be best remembered for playing department store manager 'Mr. Cuthbert Rumbold' in the British comedy series "Are You Being Served?" (1972 to 1985). His father was a chartered surveyor. Nicholas was educated at a preparatory school and took an interest in music, as he studied singing in addition to playing instruments. He focussed on acting and was trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Smith initiated his professional career on London's West End and became a familiar presence on British TV during the 1960s, in such programs as "Doctor Who," "The Wednesday Play," "The Saint," "The Avengers" and "Z Cars." In 1968, he appeared in the Broadway play "Portrait of a Queen." Among his film credit include "Salt and Pepper" (1968), "The Twelve Chairs" (1970), and "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother" (1975).
