German Novalist. He was born in Greifswald, Pomerania of what is now Poland but at the time was a part of Germany. His mother, Maria Koeppen, was a seamstress who also worked at a local theater. His father never acknowledged the son. Koeppen began his career as a journalist. His first novel was published while he was living in the Netherlands. In 1932 he returned to Germany where he would live in Munich until the time of his death. Following the war and the Holocaust, Koeppen was requested to write the memories of Holocaust survivor Jakob Littner (1883-1950). The publication was surrounded by controversy and did not include Koeppen's name. In 1992 a new edition was published, attributing Koeppen as the author. He was the author of eight novels, many dealing with the war, The Holocaust, German Guilt, and the silencing of the past. Following his death in 1996, the Wolfgang Koeppen Foundation was founded to archive and remember his literary contributions.
