Author. Best known for penning the bestselling novel "The Dirty Dozen" (1965), which was made into a popular film adaptation in 1967 starring Lee Marvin. Born to Jewish parents, his mother suffered from depression which resulted in him being sent to live at Hebrew National Home Orphanage. He served as a combat photographer with United States Army during the closing months of World War II and following his return home, he enrolled at New York University, where he studied Anthropology. After jobs at several publications, he worked as a freelance journalist. Following the success of "The Dirty Dozen", he penned the novels "The Latecomers" (1970), "It Gave Everybody Something to Do" (1973), "Knight's Cross" (1993) and "Lovers and Schemers" (2003).
