Hoak, Thomas C.

9-12-1919 to 3-5-2014. Born in Des Moines, IA; graduated from Iowa State University; served 4 years as a naval engineering officer in the South Pacific during WWII. After the war, Tom was employed by Wheeler Lumber Bridge & Supply Company as a senior officer. While in Minnesota he met his wife, Mary MacPherran, who preceded him in death, after 57 years of marriage. Tom was an avid and successful amateur golfer whose accomplishments included twice winning both the Des Moines City and Iowa state junior titles in his youth. He was captain of the Iowa State University golf team and was among the final 16 contestants, twice, in the NCAA national individual championship. He won the 1966 Trans-Mississippi Mid Amateur; qualified 5 times for the USGA National Amateur; was a quarter finalist in the Western Amateur; 3-time winner of the Northland Invitational; and 5-time ICC champion. Tom was also a founding member of Olympic Hills Golf Club in Eden Prairie. In addition to his wife, Tom is preceded in death by his sister, Florence Frowick and his brother, Richard Hoak , Sr. He is survived by daughter, Alice W. Hoak of Minneapolis; and by son, Dr. Thomas C. Hoak , Jr., his wife, Jana, and four granddaughters of Chichicastenango, Guatemala, and Turlock, California. He is also survived by brother, James Hoak, Sr. of Lost Tree Village, Florida; and by sister, Virginia Beal of Omaha, Nebraska. Burial services will be held at a later date in Duluth, Minnesota, and will be announced. Memorials preferred to: New Life Christian Center, PO Box 782, Turlock, CA 95382. Checks made payable to "Guatemala Hospital Fund."
