Rock Musician. A guitarist, he was the co-founder of "Emerson, Lake and Palmer". Born Gregory Stuart Lake, in the seaport town of Poole, in Dorset, England, he learned to play the guitar during his early teens. At fifteen, he left school to find work as a draftsman, but gravitated to focusing on becoming a professional musician. His break came as a member of the progressive band "The Gods" which led to his joining the progressive rock/psychedelic group "King Crimson" in 1968. He departed one year later to form "Emerson, Lake and Palmer", with Keith Emerson and Carl Palmer. Their union produced such hits as "Lucky Man" (1970), "From the Beginning" (1972) and "Karm Evil 9" (1973). The group would disband and reform multiple times over the next few decades. Among their albums include the self-titled debut record (1970), "Tarkus" (1971), "Pictures at an Exhibition" (1971), "Trilogy" (1972) and "Brain Salad Surgery" (1973). Lake's single "I Believe in Father Christmas" reached number two on the pop charts in the United Kingdom in 1975. In 1981, Lake released a solo self-titled album. In 1986, Emerson, Lake and drummer Cozy Powell (replaced Carl Palmer) released their self-titled album which featured the hit "Touch and Go". Lake died following a lengthy battle with cancer, only nine months after the death of bandmate Keith Emerson.
