Cherished husband of Irene, they were married for 58 years. Loving father of Donald (Ann Beckman), and Kenneth (Kyle Ann Bates). Grandfather of Nathan and Ross. He will also be dearly missed by his sisters, Betty Baker and Helen Nester, and by his nieces and nephews. His parents were Lee Hall and Lula Joseph. His father was a coal miner, and he was the sixth of their nine children. He was predeceased by his siblings, Earl, Zona, Opal, Roy, Irene and Lorraine.

After finishing high school, he went to Detroit, and enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He became a Sergeant First Class. After the service he came back to Detroit, and studied at Wayne State University on the GI Bill. During that time, he worked for the City of Detroit part time. He met Irene Pollands at a work Christmas party in 1956. He graduated from WSU, and he and Irene were married. He earned a masters degree in Urban Planning. After 37 years in 1993 he retired from the appointed position of Deputy Director of Employment and Training. He enjoyed photography, and was a member of the Oakwood Camera Club. He liked camping with his family, and reading.
