She was the daughter of Timothy Meigs and Elizabeth Jane Holt Meigs. Her grandfather, Col. Return Jonathan Meigs held the appointment as the first Cherokee Agent and Agent for the War Department of Tennessee.

So, little Elizabeth had a childhood unmatched by any child of that generation. In a mountainous wildness home to panthers and bears, and to native peoples who cherished their homeland, Elizabeth watched the officers come and go. She witnessed transactions that would change the lives of the Cherokees forever.

Before she was born, her grandmother Meigs died. Elizabeth's mother had the great responsibility and great pleasure of being the Agency's hostess.

On 25 October 1834, in Monroe county, TN she became the wife of Rev. Madison Caruthers Hawk. She was twenty-five. She lived out her life in Tennessee and witnessed the details of the Trail of Tears
