At age 16, Ellen left Londonderry, Ireland and traveled on the Ship Mohango and arrived at the port of Philadelphia on 22 May 1856. She immigrated with her mother Nancy (Annie) , age 48, and her brother Neal, age 20. (Only known sibling at this time). Her father, Neal, died in County Donegal during the famine between the years 1839-1856.

On 5 Jun 1861 she married James Carr in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. It is believed that James was also from County Donegal.

1870 Census shows Ellen and James Carr with 2 children: James (8) and Kate (2). Also living with them is her mother Anne (70) and her brother Neal (34). Both James Carr and Neal McElwee are listed as day laborers.

1900 Census Ellen and James are living in a rented home on Shakespeare St. Children listed are: Cornelius (Feb 1871), John (Jan 1875), Agnes (Nov 1876), Anna (Oct 1882) and adopted son Joseph (Dec 1891).

Ellen died on Nov 17, 1904 of Pulmonary Tuberculosis which she had been ill for 6 months with. She had been staying with her daughter, Catherine Letzkus, for over a month when she died.

Funeral services were held at Sacred Heart Church and she was buried in Calvary Cemetery on Nov 20, 1904.
