"John Shaw is the 2nd son of Alexander Shaw and Elizabeth Anderson. He was born on the 9th February 1799 at Kilsyth, Stirlingshire (North Lanarkshire), Scotland. He grew up in a family of weavers; John would have learned the art of weaving at an early age and was a weaver all his life. At the age of 25, he married Mary Laing on the 25th Jun 1824 at Kilsyth, Stirlingshire, Scotland. Mary Laing was born on the 13th August 1805 at Kilsyth - her parents were Alexander Laing and Mary Livingstone.
They lived in Charles Street, Kilsyth, and had a family of nine sons. Their sons were to travel the world with three immigrating to the United States of America, one son to Australia, two sons to New Zealand, with three sons staying in Scotland with all remaining, living in Glasgow. Most sons were farmers but a variety of other occupations being a Brewer, Shoemaker, Grocer, Tramway Guard.
John Shaw died at the age of 68 years old at Kingston, Kilsyth on the 7th August 1867. Mary died aged 83 on the 8th February 1888 at Glasgow, Scotland and, in later years, Mary lived with her son Matthew until her death."
