He was assigned to the 106th MG Battalion, 27th Division, as a Saddler. The 27th Division was at Camp Wadsworth, SC, for training. On October 25, 1917 he was transferred to Company G, 102nd Ammunition Trains, 27th Division.
The 102nd Ammunition Trains shipped out for Europe, June 14, 1918, from Newport News, VA, aboard the USS Czar.
