Malaysian Monarch. He was the 4th modern Sultan of Pahang from 1932 to 1974. Born in Pekan, he was the second son of Sultan Abdullah Al-Mu'tassim Billah Shah. He succeeded his father after his death in 1932 and was installed on May 28, 1933. During the Japanese occupation of Malaya, he encouraged several resistance movements. In 1957, the constitutional monarchy of Malaysia is formed, The Yang di-Pertuan Agong. The monarchy is elected by the Conference of Rulers, comprising of the nine rulers of the Malay states. Due to his various marriages to celebrities, cabaret dancers and commoners, many Malay rulers thought he was unsuitable for royalty, and they declined to choose him as Agong of Malaysia in five separate times. He was married to Tengku Ampuan Pahang Raja Fatimah, the daughter of Sultan Iskandar of Perak, and Indonesian-born Malay actress, model, and producer Maria Menado. He died in 1974 and was succeeded by his son Ahmad Shah, who would become Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
