Professional Football Player and assistant football coach. From 1965 to 1968, Thomas was a member of the University of Texas at Arlington's football team, which won the Pecan Bowl against North Dakota State in 1967. With 952 receiving yards in a season, Thomas holds the school record. With 1,906 yards, he was also the career leader in yards. He spent five seasons with the San Francisco 49ers (1969 to 1973), appearing in 63 games as a running back and wide receiver. On 165 carries, Thomas rushed for 824 yards and four touchdowns, while also catching 67 passes for 923 yards and eight touchdowns. Thomas was the oldest of three NFL brothers, with Mike playing for the Washington Redskins and San Diego Chargers, and Earl for the Chicago Bears, St. Louis Cardinals, and Houston Oilers. Following his professional football career, Thomas worked as an assistant football coach at TCU under head coach Jim Shofner from 1974 to 1976. In 2000, he was inducted into the UT Arlington Hall of Honor.
