Actor. He was best known to television viewers as Detective Neal Washington on the popular 1980s NBC drama "Hill Street Blues" from 1981 to 1987. He began his show business career at New York's famed and influential Negro Ensemble Company after training at the New Federal Theatre in New York City. In 1976, he made his "small screen" debut on the television series "What's Happening." Besides "Hill Street Blues," he went on to appear in such series as "Good Times," "The White Shadow," "Generations," "Dream On," and "Savannah." In 1982, he earned an Emmy nomination in the category Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his performance in "Hill Street Blues." In 1978, he made his film debut in "House Calls;" and later appeared in such works as "Rocky II" (1979), "The Hunter" (1980), "DeepStar Six" (1989), "Fled" (1996), and "Nowhere Road" (2002). He also continued to perform on the theatrical stage for the remainder of his career.
