Football player. He was a German soccer player and official. He was considered one of the best center forwards in the world during his playing days. He played his entire career at Hamburger SV and was considered one of the club's most important players. In 1961, he received his nickname "Uns Uwe" ("Our Uwe") following a cup match against Burnley FC, which, unusually for the time, was televised in full. In the 1963/64 season, he was the first top scorer in the Bundesliga. As captain of the German national team, he was runner-up in the 1966 World Cup and finished third in the 1970 World Cup. Because of his services to German soccer, in 1972 the DFB named him honorary captain of the national team, the second player ever to be given that honor. In 1986, the Hamburg Senate endowed the Uwe Seeler Award on the occasion of his 50th birthday. At the time, he refrained from hosting any major celebrations. Instead, youth departments of soccer clubs in the Hamburg Soccer Association are awarded 5,000 euros each year. He was president of HSV from 1995 to 1998. From 2003, he was an honorary citizen of his hometown.
