Jacob SCHERER probably married his first wife, Catharina Wagner, in Germany about 1834 and brought his bride to the United States. Their first child, Catherine SCHERER, was born on May 26, 1836, in Guilderland, Albany County, New York. A second child, Elizabeth, was also born in Guilderland, Albany County, New York on June 1, 1839.

For some reason Jacob took his family back to Germany about 1840. He then returned to the US before 1846 but settled in Washington County, Ohio.

He married 2nd Elizabeth CLARK on August 2, 1848 in Washington Co., Ohio, about two months after the death of his first wife. Together they had two children, John C., born 1849 and Rebecca A. Scherer, born 1852. His widow took her two children and migrated out of state. She lived in Michigan, Iowa, Illinois and Kansas. She married 2nd. Roger Wilson and is buried in Clay County, Kansas as Elizabeth Wilson but there are no dates on her tombstone. It is not know when or where Rebecca, the daughter of Elizabeth Clark Scherrer and Jacob Scherer, died or was married, etc.

1850 Washington Co., Ohio Census; Aurelius Township; Household and Visit #367-369: SHEARER, Jacob, age 38, born in Germany, farmer; Elizabeth, age 24, born about 1826 in Ohio; Catharine, age 14, born about 1836 in New York; Elizabeth, age 11, born about 1839 in New York; John, age 1, born about 1849/1850 in Ohio

In 1850 they were next door to Peter SHOOLDICE (SCHULTHEIS). The 24 year old Elizabeth was Jacob's 2nd wife and mother of the youngest child on that census, John.

Copies of probate and deed of conveyance from Washington Co., Ohio prove that Jacob SHEARER {sic} died between July 1, 1853 and October 31, 1853.

From the book WASHINGTON COUNTY, OHIO PROBATE ABSTRACTS, compiled by Gail S. Blankenau: "SCHERER, JACOB, Will 1835 pr 9-p, 585; P 1855 B - 143, 152

In addition to these documents I own the personal 1830 New Testament Bible of Jacob Scherer. A small portion has notes in English but much of it is in Catharina's or Jacob's scrawly German handwriting.
