The last pages of Life's book were turned and the call to the greater beyond of a most beloved Chelan Valley citizen in the passing of Mrs. Hanna J. Varney, of Lakeside, yesterday afternoon at her home in Lakeside.
The end came as a sudden surprise to her many friends and to the family. Mrs. Varney was in exceptional good health and at the time of her death was drying and canning some fruit. Just a few minutes before she had conversed with her husband who was stacking wood and talked of getting her canning and drying done that they might make a trip to Seattle to visit a daughter. About twenty minutes later Mr. Varney stepped into the house and found his wife lying on the bed where she passed away, due to a paralytic stroke.
Mrs. Varney was 82 years old. She was born in Alliance, Ohio on July 11, 1844. She came here in 1900 and spent practically all of the 26 years in the vicinity, making her home in Lakeside where she resided up until the time of her death.
She leaves to mourn her death, her husband J. P. Varney; five sons, Harry of Chelan, Lon of Lakeside, Will of Waterville, Clyde of Trinidad, Wa., and Ioy of Pasadena, Cal., three daughters, Mrs. Clara Johnston of Seattle, Cora Varney of Honolulu, and Mrs. Ann Davis of Ottumwa, Iowa; two brothers; Will of Nebraska and Edward Heacock of San Diego, Ca., and one sister, Mrs. Ella Hair of Chelan.
