Arthur Hyson was from Astoria, Queens, New York. He became a professional bodybuilder (physical culturist) by 1918-1924 and during this time won several competitions in Atlantic City. Like many physique champions of his day, he was also a champion wrestler and had many articles announcing his wins, especially at the Knights of Columbus Center, Long Island City, during the 1921-1922 season. By August, 1922 he was one of Earle Liederman's directors on physical culture. He performed his daily workouts on Kentucky Avenue in Atlantic City on the beach. He was also noted "Strong Man" and had an act he performed on stage. He was noted for tearing phone books in half and lifting a 200 lb. dumbell clear over his head. An astonishing feat for a man weighing only 145 lbs. He became a boxing instructor at the Hudson Terminal Gym on Church Street in New York City in 1924 and by the mid-1920's he was boxing and became a fight manager for Eddie Roberts of Brooklyn. News articles from 1923-1925 show he was quite famous for his abilities and there are many news reports on how he trained his boxers and his professionalism in this sport.
