Ann Skakel McCooey
1933 - 2023
Ann Skakel McCooey, age 90, of Greenwich Connecticut and Southwest Harbor, Maine, passed away peacefully at her home, on November 13, 2023, surrounded by her family. A long and beautiful presence in the world has left us and as we have been lifted by her presence so we will be diminished by her passing.
Born on February 15, 1933, in Chicago, daughter of George and Ann Brannack Skakel. Ann graduated from the Convent of the Sacred Heart School in Greenwich, Connecticut and from Manhattanville College in Purchase, New York. A person of many passions and loves, she supported and loved the Abbey of Gethsemani, Trappist Kentucky. She was also a member of the Board of Regents at Georgetown University and sat on the university's board of Campus Ministry.
Ann was the devoted and loving mother of private (Private) and private, the proud and adoring Grandmother of private. She is survived by her sister, private, and, the too many to count but equally loved nieces and nephews of the extended Skakel/McCooey family. She was predeceased by her parents and siblings: Georgeann (1983), James (1998), George Jr., (1966), Rushton (2003), Patricia (2000).
Finally, Ann was an unquestionably loyal and extraordinary friend to everyone she met. Her generosity knew no limits and her capacity for love and laughter was immeasurable. Always an avid reader, she will be remembered by many for hosting book parties, "symposiums," where friends and acquaintances argued about the meaning of novels long into the night.
Services will be held Monday evening, November 27, 2023, at Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home 31 Arch Street, Greenwich from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for her on Tuesday, November 28, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at Mary's Catholic Church, 178 Greenwich Avenue, Greenwich.
The McCooey family wants to send a special thanks to James Brunetti, MD who kept mom safe and healthy for so many years. You have been a great friend to her and to us; generous with your time, advice, and love. Thank you.
