This man, name not known, died sometime in the 2nd half of the 19th century, likely after 1860 and before 1880. He was buried by John M. Beard (1823-1904). Reportedly, there was an epidemic at the time (cholera?); the disease was so greatly feared that the traveler -- who had asked to spend the night in John M. Beard's barn -- was quickly buried with no attempt to identify him.
His burial site is marked with a large, natural stone. As you enter the gate of the small cemetery in the woods, looking straight ahead, the burial site is to your right, over near the far corner to your right.
Although the traveler's name has never been known, the story of how he asked for a place to rest for the night, was found dead the next morning, and was quickly buried has been told to most of the descendants of John M. Beard, the man who buried him.
The place is rural even in 2008. In that time, the only reason for an unknown traveler to have stopped would have been that the person was traveling on the road between Delphi and Rossville (Indiana), moving north or south. The story gave no mention of the man traveling by horse; he may have been walking. It is 13 miles from Delphi to Rossville; nine-and-a-half miles from Delphi to Owasco.
At the time of his death, his death was made known to the people in the surrounding community. No one knew who the man was.
