Mrs. J. P. Rowe Dies in Richmond: Funeral Saturday
Religious Leader Was 92 Years Old
Mrs. Julia Taliaferro Rowe, for Many years prominent in the civic and religious life of Fredericksburg, died last night in a Richmond convalescent home. The widow of J. P. Rowe, Sr., she was 92 years old.
She suffered a cerebral hemorrhage Aug. 22 and remained in Mary Washington Hospital for two weeks. After improving somewhat, she was taken to Richmond. Her condition grew worse late last week and she was in a coma for several days before her death.
Mrs. Rowe had been active until her health began declining in recent months. Before returning to her home at 801 Hanover St. this summer, she had spent several months with her daughter in Hilton Village.
FUNERAL SATURDAY Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Fairview Baptist Church, which she helped found and to which she devoted many years of her life. The services will be conducted by the pastor, the Rev. David R. Hepler. Dr. Robert F. Caverlee, pastor of Fredericksburg Baptist Church, will assist. Interment will follow in City Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be six of her grandsons: Josiah P. Rowe III and Charles S. Rowe, of Fredericksburg: William R. Rowe, of Baltimore; Daniel M. Rowe, of Richmond; Dr. Wallace P Rowe, of Bethesda (Md.) Naval Hospital, and George D. Rowe, of Philadelphia.
NATIVE OF CAROLINE Born in Caroline County on April 23, 1859 as Julia Cullen Taliaferro, she was the daughter of William Taylor Taliaferro and Cornelia Mason Taliaferro.
She spent most of her youth in Richmond after her home was destroyed during the War Between the States. She was educated at Bowling Green Seminary and began teaching in South Carolina at the age of 16. While attending summer school in Fredericksburg, she met the late Josiah P. Rowe, to whom she was married in Richmond on July 13, 1887.
Her husband, her father-in-law, Absalom P. Rowe, and a son, the late Josiah P. Rowe, Jr.. all served as mayors of Fredericksburg.
BAPTIST LEADER
Mrs. Rowe was a deeply religious woman and for many years was an ardent member of the Fredericksburg Baptist Church. She was a leader in missionary activities and other religious programs. The first group of Sunbeams in that church was organized by her.
Later Mrs. Rowe was one of the organizers of the Mother's Club in the West End area from which developed the Fairview Baptist Church, to which she devoted many years of her life. She taught Sunday School classes in both the Fredericksburg Baptist Church and Fairview Baptist Church over a long period of time.
FIRST PTA PRESIDENT
Mother of a large family, she took an active interest in the public schools and was the first president of the Parent-Teacher Association in Fredericksburg.
She helped organize the local American Legion Auxiliary and was one of the first members of the Kenmore Association. Other organizations to which she belonged included the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities. Survivors include three sons and one daughter. They are W. Francis Rowe, of Fredericksburg: Dr. George D. Rowe, Baltimore; Dr. Taylor P. Rowe, Richmond, and Mrs. Joseph A. Fontaine, Hilton Village.
In addition she leaves two sisters and one brother, Mrs. Mary E. Allen, Mrs. Evelyn T. Fleet and James W. Taliaferro, all of Richmond; seventeen grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
