Criminal. Arrested in 1935 and sentenced to life in prison for bank robberies in several states and kidnapping, Limerick spent some time at Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary before being transferred to Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary. On May 23, 1938, he took part in the third escape attempt at the prison with fellow inmates Rufus Franklin and James Lucas. After attacking and mortally injuring Officer Royal Cline in the prison's wood working shop, the three prisoners made their way to the roof and attempted to take over the guard tower occupied by Officer Harold Stites. Stites responded by opening fire on the inmates and mortally wounding Limerick, who died shortly afterwards. Franklin, who was also wounded, and Lucas were recaptured and later both sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Officer Cline.
