Mr. Berwald was president of the Senack Shoe Co. and developed a chain of shoe stores known as Paul's. He was born in Poland and came to the United States when he was 16, joining family members in Dallas. He moved to St. Louis in 1931.
In 1988, Mr. Berwald was one of 39 local Jewish leaders honored for community service by the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith.
The Jewish Community Centers Association gave Mr. Berwald the Stanley Olshwanger-Joseph Gershman leadership award in 1964. He had held all major offices in the association since joining it in 1941. Shortly after his 70th birthday, he established a fund for the training of social workers for Jewish Centers work.
