Ernest "Ernie" Melhuish, 77, of Fayetteville passed away at home early Wednesday morning, July 22, 2009, with family at his side. During his long illness, he was lovingly cared for by his wife, his family, Dr. Orange of Fayetteville, and Odyssey Hospice. Born October 10, 1931, in Newburgh, NY to Ernest and Elsie Melhuish (nee Polhamus), he leaves behind his devoted wife of 54 years, Ethel Comfort, his daughter, Carol Maniscalco and husband Gordon of Havertown, PA, and his son, William Melhuish and wife Jeanette of Mayville, MI. Lovingly adored as "PopPop" by his grandchildren, he also leaves behind his grandson, Seth Maniscalco and wife Gina of Youngstown, OH, his granddaughter Laura Maniscalco of Havertown, PA, and two great-grandchildren, Kyle and Katelyn Maniscalco of Youngstown, OH. Ernie was a graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, Long Island, NY, and Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, NJ. After his honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy, he enjoyed a long career as a Manager of Engineering. Ernie loved spending time with family and friends. He felt closest to God in the outdoors fishing, golfing and walking in the woods. Playing bridge was a challenging past-time that fostered life-long friendships. He was proud to be American and loved helping others. Ernie was a member of the Elks Club of Waynesboro, the American Legion, and St. David's United Church of Christ. A memorial service will be held in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Rd. in Chambersburg on Saturday, July 25th at 10am. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. A private internment will be held in Woodlawn Cemetery, New Windsor, NY. In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that memorial contributions be made to the Fisher House Foundation, Inc., an organization which supports American military and their families in their time of need. Donations may be sent to Fisher House Foundation, Inc., 111 Rockville Pike, Suite 420, Rockville, MD 20850.
