Max was born in Coalgate, Indian Territory to Henry and Elizabeth (Roberts) Fleck. He had brown hair and grey eyes. He was the oldest of three siblings, the next two being Willie and then Catharina. His parents owned a cafe in the 1930's.
In 1937 he lived in Medicine, Kansas and then starting in April of 1940 he worked for the WPA.
He married Margery Fleck and together they had five children, including a set of twins. He also helped raise Margery's first child, Dale Westbrook.
