James was born about 1820/21, the son of John H. and Hannah (Mount) Mount. He married Mahala Everett on 24 May 1842 in Middlesex Co., NJ. According to family tradition, they set out to live in the Finger Lakes area of New York in a covered wagon on their wedding day. They were living in Cherry Creek, Chautauqua Co., NY (where James's father also lived), in 1850. By 1853, the family had returned to New Jersey and was living in Monroe Twp., Middlesex Co., in 1860. James was a farmer. He died near Jamesburg, Middlesex Co.
