Enlisted, May 11, 1916, in the 3rd Field Hospital, NYNG, in Brooklyn, NY. He served with the 3rd Field Hospital on the Mexican border from October 1916 - January 1917.

The 3rd Field Hospital reorganized for the World War as part of the 102nd Sanitation Trains, 27th Division. Transferred Nov. 18, 1817 to the Sanitation Detachment, 104th Machine Gun Battalion, 27th Division then on March 8, 1918 to the Sanitation Detachment, 105th Machine Gun Battalion, 27th Division. After training at Camp Wadsworth, SC, the 105th Machine Gun Battalion deployed to Europe, on May 18, 1918, from Newport News, VA, aboard the Calomares. He saw combat in both Belgium & France. Returning to the States, March 6, 1919, aboard the Leviathan, docking at Hoboken, NJ. He marched in the great " Welcome Home Parade " for the 27th Division, up 5th Avenue, in New York City, on March 25, 1919.

He served with his brother Charles Broggelwirth ( 1897 - 1920 ), in the 105th Machine Gun Battalion. His brother was severely wounded, October 17, 1918, by shell fire. His brother must have passed through the Battalion Aid Station, were his was working, before being evacuated.
