Thomas' parents and sibling came to the US from Dukinfield, England aboard the S.S. Edinburgh in 1863. Thomas remained in England and married Sarah Anne Ogden, 3 Jan 1864 at Prestwich, St. Mary, Lancashire.

He followed the family in Dec 1864 after the birth of his eldest child, George, and wrote of his travels in his diary, arriving in the US January 12th.

By 1866 Sarah and son George were with him, as their next son Samuel was born in Blackburn, PA. His parents and siblings, except brother Samuel, picked up and moved by 1873 to Brazil, Appanoose, IA where the family purchased and operated their own coal mine known as the Star Mine and later the Peacock Mine.

In 1910 Thomas, Sarah and son Joseph are listed in Bellair Township, Appanoose, IA. Thomas and Sarah had seven children they are:

George married Emma Rothwell
Samuel married Mary Foster
Mary Elizabeth married Robert Lawton
Charles H. married Mary Ducey
Lady Sylvania married John Cowles
Joseph Adam married Kathryn Cody Nickolson
Alice Ann married Robert Lester Turner
