Patrick was killed saving the life of Johanna Tulley on June 15, 1908. Her pony was running away with her. McAteer caught and threw the pony, but his skull was fractured when he fell on a car track. He was awarded a Carnegie Silver Medal for heroism, and his widow was voted a pension of $50 a month plus $5 a month for each of her seven children.

Husband of Mary McAteer. Father of Alice, Patrick, John, Margareth, James, Joseph and Edward McAteer, and brother of Mrs. John O'Neill.
