VAN NUYS — Thomas Martin Begley, a longtime commercial real estate broker and son of the late actor Ed Begley, has died at a convalescent hospital here, his son announced Friday. He was 71.

A Van Nuys resident since 1948, Begley died Thursday at Beverly Manor Convalescent Hospital following a lengthy illness, Tim Begley said.

In 1948, following a stint as an Army soldier in the Pacific during World War II, Begley moved to California from his native Connecticut and began a career as a salesman, working for a variety of clients.

He entered the real estate industry in 1962, selling and leasing commercial property for Forrest E. Olson. During a career that lasted nearly 30 years, Begley's clients included such companies as Papermate and Fedco. He retired in the early 1990s due to poor health, his son said.

Born July 17, 1923 in Hartford, Conn., Begley spent much of his early life in Connecticut, appearing occasionally with his famous father on radio and television. He was also an accomplished tap dancer as a child.

"He had a very sharp wit," his first wife, Marie, said Friday. "He loved to play jokes on people."

In addition to his son Tim, Begley is survived by his wife of 17 years, Inga; another son, Tom Begley Jr., of Canyon Country; three daughters, Karen Felthoven of Denver, Sharon Mineo of Van Nuys, and Marie Icenogle of Newhall; a brother, actor Ed Begley Jr. of Studio City; a sister, Ailene Curto of Springfield, Mass.; 13 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be held Monday at 3 p.m. at the Northridge home of Tim Begley. For more information, call Begley at (818) 368-0290.
