Conductor. Born in Frankfurt, Germany, he was an orchestra conductor known as one of the world's leading interpreters of Wagnerian music. In the early 1900s, he was conducting the orchestra for Enrico Caruso's Metropolitan Opera tour in America, when offered a position for the newly formed San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. In 1915, he returned to the U.S. and excepted the post as head conductor of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. As orchestra conductor and opera director, he was featured on the "Standard Symphony Hour" radio show, performed in Europe and in the Metropolitan Opera House, New York City until his farewell performance April 15, 1930.
