Florence Bertrand Johnson died of natural causes at home on Saturday, March 25, 2000 at age 90. Florence was born on the Butte Boulevard on Feb. 12, 1910, and was the fourth of five children of Osias and Edmondine (Sylvain) Bertrand. She grew up speaking French and English.

She attended St. Joseph's Grade School and Girls Central High, where she was the salutatorian of the Class of 1927. Florence won several public speaking contests, and in her senior year, won first place in declamation at the State of Montana Speech Competition. She also won a scholarship to the University of Montana for her academic performance in high school and her public speaking abilities.

Florence worked in several Butte institutions including Penney's, Burr's, and Hennessy's. From 1948 to 1951, she owned and operated a grocery store. Florence and George are the parents of sons Laurent A. Johnson, Butte, and Dr. George Johnson of Casteau, Belgium. Florence was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Helen Smith, Roy Bertrand, Will Bertrand, Alvey Bertrand.
