James was born in County Tyrone, Ireland. He immigrated to Philadelphia with his parents when he was 13 years old. In 1840, he married Miss Martha Miller. They had six daughters and two sons. In addition to his wife, he was survived by three children: S.A. Hebrew, of Stockton, Mrs. Broadback, of Bow Creek, and Mrs. Scott, of Moravia, Iowa.
