Thomas Conklin was born 1845 in Seneca, Ontario, New York. He was the 8th child of nine children who were born to Irish immigrants Patrick and Elizabeth Conklin, and the only son to live past young adulthood.

He served in the Civil War. His first enlistment date was May 1, 1861 when he was just 16 years old. He was a Private in Company H of the 33rd Regiment of the NY Infantry. His brother, Robert Conkin, was enlisted at the same time in the same company. Robert was mustered out on February 21, 1862 due to disability (and soon died of consumption in Flint Creek, New York). Thomas is documented as having been mustered out or deserted February 27, 1862 from Elmira Hospital. He most likely accompanied his brother back home.

He re-enlisted December 1, 1863 in Canandaigua, New York at the age of 18. He was enlisted in Company H, New York 24th Cavalry Regiment on January 7, 1864 as a Private. He was promoted to Full Corporal on February 10, 1865. He was mustered out of that regiment on Jun 17, 1865.

He transferred to Company H, New York 1st Cavalry Regiment on June 17, 1865 and was mustered out on July 19, 1865 at Cloud's Mill, Virginia.

He enlisted again at Rochester, New York on December 1865 in the Company B of the New York 10th Infantry for three years and was demoted July 16, 1866.

He survived the war, and went west, and worked as a lumberman.

He applied for a pension on the basis of disability in 1892 from Washington, and later died of Bright's Disease at the Washington Soldiers' Home in Orting, Washington in 1902.
