McGee, the first generation of his family born in America, was the son of Droheda, Ireland, native John Hugo McGee and his Louisiana-born wife, Anastasie Savoie. McGee was self-taught, yet he passed the bar exam. He married Domecile Miller, whose uncle was the infamous Civil War "jayhawker" Ozeme Carrier.
